Developing A Level Pedagogy Work Group

This Work Group supports experienced A level teachers to not only further develop their expertise but provide a model to support departmental change.

The Work Group involves a direct working partnership between the Maths Hubs Network and the Advanced Mathematics Support Programme (AMSP).

What is involved?

In this Work Group we will be looking at Graph Transformations as a thread that weaves itself through the Key Stage 5 curriculum. We will look at what students come to us with from KS3/KS4 and how we can develop that understanding onto the level needed for A-level study, and also look at how Graph Transformations re-emerges in themes such as the Chain Rule and the Normal Distribution.

Who can apply?

Participants will be established teachers of A level Maths who are looking to deepen their pedagogical understanding. They must be teaching a current A level Maths group.

This Work Group would be particularly useful for those who may have already completed other A level subject knowledge and pedagogy CPD.

Benefits

  • Your students will have a deeper conceptual understanding of the A level Maths content
  • You will understand the purpose of the Overarching Themes, including use of technology, and their impact on teaching and learning in A level Maths
  • You and your department will be equipped to better support the development of stronger subject knowledge pedagogy
  • You and your department will further embed the Overarching Themes into your A level

WHAT ARE THE EXPECTATIONS?

Participants’ institutions must commit to:

  • releasing them to attend all Work Group sessions
  • allowing them to develop their practice in their classroom and share this with department colleagues.

Participants must commit to:

  • attending all Work Group sessions and engaging with and completing activities between Work Group sessions

The wider context

There is a range of currently available maths teacher professional development around subject knowledge and pedagogy for new teachers of A level Maths via the Advanced Mathematics Support Programme (AMSP), but little extended professional development for experienced teachers or leaders of A level Maths teaching. These Work Groups seek to fill this gap and support experienced A level teachers to not only further develop their expertise but provide a model to support departmental change.

The aim of these Work Groups is to support the teaching of A level Maths, with a focus on pedagogical content knowledge in order to enhance and deepen student understanding of the course and its Overarching Themes.

What is the cost?

The Developing A Level Pedagogy Work Group is fully funded by the Maths Hubs Programme and the AMSP so is free to participating schools/colleges.

Who will lead the programme?

Sam Blatherwick -Assistant Maths Hub Lead at East Midlands South and Head of Maths at an 11-18 school. Sam has lead workshops at national conferences for the past five years and is a passionate thinker about how we get students to make the best steps from GCSE to A-level mathematics.
