Primary Teaching for Mastery Sustaining Work Group

The Primary Teaching for Mastery Sustaining Work Group is for all primary schools who have previously participated in a Primary Teaching for Mastery Work Group (TRG), or who are Mastery Specialist schools.

What is involved?

Teaching for mastery requires significant change to teaching practices, culture, school systems and structures. Time and effort are required to refine and sustain change. Sustaining Work Groups provide the opportunity each year for schools to continue working towards their vision for maths.

Schools in Sustaining Work Groups:

·       may have been working with the Maths Hub for several years
·       have just moved from an Embedding Work Group
·       may be returning to the hub after pausing activity for a few years

It doesn’t matter. As long as schools are committed to a mastery approach to benefit all pupils – we can all learn from each other.  The Work Groups provide the opportunity for schools to work beyond their own setting, networking: exchanging practice, and collaborating to support each other to sustain Teaching for Mastery.

Sustaining Work Groups are designed to give participants the time and opportunity to develop specialist subject knowledge through planning and observing learning.  In addition, leaders will also get the opportunity to further their understanding of the change process to support them back in school, and reflect upon effective forms of professional development to support their colleagues with their development.

East Midlands South Maths Hub 2024/25 offer

In 2024/25 the Primary Sustaining Work Groups at East Midlands South Maths Hub will work on themes that have been identified locally as a priority issue.  Where possible, we plan to duplicate the themes across the region to reduce travel.  Based on feedback, we have also adapted our model to three full day meetings (one each term).

The 5 Big Ideas in Teaching for Mastery and The Essence of Mathematics Teaching for Mastery will continue to be used to support schools as they refine and reflect on their mathematics provision for fidelity and consistency.  As a result, adaptive teaching and oracy will remain at the heart of all our Sustaining Work Groups.

Historically, we have run Sustaining Work Groups for one academic year.  However, to foster building relationship and really getting to grips with the focus theme, there is the possibility for this activity to continue beyond one academic year.

Primary Sustaining Work Group themes (2024/25)

Schools can pick one theme to work on in 2024/25 but are able to send an additional representative to the Work Group if they can commit to both participants being released to attend all sessions.
