Secondary Teaching for Mastery Sustaining Work Group

Secondary Teaching for Mastery Sustaining Work Groups are for all departments that have previously participated in Teaching for Mastery Development Work Groups and all Mastery Specialist Departments.

If your school has been part of our 2023/24 Secondary Teaching for Mastery Development Work Group click here for further information about 2024/25.

What is involved?

Departmental systems, policies and collaborative professional development structures are required to embed highly effective classroom practices in a way that will be sustained in the long term.  Sustaining Work Groups provide an opportunity each year for departments to continue working towards their vision for maths.

Schools in Sustaining Work Groups:

  • may have been working with the Maths Hub for several years
  • may be returning to the hub after pausing activity for a few years

It doesn’t matter.  As long as schools are committed to an approach to benefit all pupils – we can all learn from each other.  The Sustaining Work Groups provide the opportunity for schools to work beyond their own setting: networking, exchanging practice, and collaborating to support each other to sustain Teaching for Mastery.

Sustaining Work Groups are designed to give mastery advocates the time and opportunity to reflect on approaches in their school, whilst also working with their subject lead and other members of the department to refine the school’s systems, policies and structures.

East Midlands South Maths Hub 2024/25 offer

In 2024/25 the Secondary Sustaining Work Groups at East Midlands South Maths Hub will work on themes that have been identified locally as a priority issue.  Based on feedback, we have also adapted our model to three full day meetings (one each term). In the presentation below, Jayne Ireland (Secondary Assistant Maths Hub Lead) explains the themes available for 2024/25.

Secondary Sustaining Work Group themes (2024/25):
  • Developing fluency with multiplicative reasoning in Key Stage 3

As the central sessions for this theme have now started we are no longer offering this theme to schools this year.

For schools that want to focus on developing multiplicative thinking across key areas of the curriculum in Key Stage 3.  This theme introduces NCETM resources and provides a combination of national and local training around them to support teacher professional development across the department.

Prerequisite:  n/a

  • Developing Problem Solving
For schools that want to build on the work started by subject leads in their community last year to develop a problem solving progression. The focus on mathematical thinking will explore practices and strategies to develop pupils’ skills and mindsets towards routine and non-routine problems.
Prerequisite:  Previously this was open to schools who participated in the Secondary Subject Leaders community in 2023/2024, we have now opened this up to all schools.

  • Relaunching a mastery approach
For schools that feel they want to go back to basics with understanding a mastery approach, perhaps due to a significant change in personnel, subject or senior leadership.  This theme has the option to come with bespoke school visits through Targeted Support in Mathematics.
Prerequisite:  n/a

The 5 Big Ideas in Teaching for Mastery and The Essence of Mathematics Teaching for Mastery will continue to be used to support schools as they refine and reflect on their mathematics provision for fidelity and consistency.

Schools can pick one theme to work on in 2024/25 but are able to send an additional representative to the Work Group if they can commit to both participants being released to attend all sessions.

Benefits

  • understand the principles and practices behind the creation of a coherent and connected curriculum which promotes teaching for mastery
  • understand the benefits of collaborative professional development for sustained development of professional knowledge and practice within a department.

Who is it for?

Schools that have previously participated in either a Secondary Teaching for Mastery Work Group or the Mastery Specialist Programme should join this Work Group.

What is the Cost?

The Teaching for Mastery Sustaining project is fully funded by the Maths Hubs Programme so is free to participating schools.
