Specialist Knowledge for Teaching Maths - Primary Early Career Teachers (Phase B)

This programme is designed to support primary early career teachers who are in their second or third year of teaching who have previously participated in the SKTM-Primary Early Career Teachers Phase A (also known as Phase 1) in 2023/24 and wish to continue into a second year.

What is involved?

The emphasis in Phase B is on supporting participants to review and analyse practice, making adaptations and evaluating the impact of these.

Phase B focuses on exploring key concepts in the development of additive and multiplicative reasoning, and reviewing approaches to ensure pupils are ready for the planned sequence of learning such as diagnostic questioning, pre-teaching etc.

This programme will take place across the equivalent of four days.

What are the benefits?

Participants will:

  • review the approaches used to assess pupils’ prior learning and make necessary adaptations so that learning sequences are planned to take pupils’ starting points into account
  • work constructively with colleagues and mentors, sharing with them the professional learning taking place within this programme
  • enhance their maths subject knowledge with an emphasis on the key concepts, the representations, and the language used to help pupils develop number sense (phase a) or additive and multiplicative reasoning
  • identify common misconceptions and ways of addressing these to help pupils master important concepts
  • develop an understanding of key principles and approaches associated with teaching for mastery

What are the expectations?

Participants and their schools must be able to commit to the full academic year’s programme.

This programme is designed for primary early career teachers (those in their second or third year of teaching) who have previously participated in SKTM - Primary Early Career Teachers in 2023/24.
