As part of the Best Start in Life strategy for 2026/27, we are excited to offer two professional development opportunities designed to strengthen early mathematics: the revised Mastering Number at Reception and KS1 Work Group and the NEW SKTM Reception Teachers Programme

Mastering Number

at Reception and KS1 Work Group

 

 

This Work Group aims to secure firm foundations in additive relationships and the development of good number sense for all children from Reception through to Year 1 and Year 2.

Schools that have not previously taken part in Mastering Number at Reception and Key Stage 1 and those that have previously engaged in the programme can take part.

As part of this Best Start in Life Strategy this one-year SKTM programme will include number, shape, space and pattern. Participants will also explore how children’s learning in all these areas can be supported through the development of the following skills:

  • oracy (including the development of mathematical language)
  • spatial reasoning
  • executive function.
