Best Start in Life - Early Years Professional Development

As part of the Best Start in Life strategy for 2026/27, we are excited to offer two professional development opportunities designed to strengthen early mathematics: the revised Mastering Number at Reception and KS1 Work Group and the NEW SKTM Reception Teachers Programme. Bespoke support is also available to eligible schools through Targeted Support in Mathematics.

We have also included below additional opportunities that you may be of interest.

As part of this Best Start in Life Strategy this one-year SKTM programme will include number, shape, space and pattern. Participants will also explore how children’s learning in all these areas can be supported through the development of the following skills:

  • oracy (including the development of mathematical language)
  • spatial reasoning
  • executive function.

Targeted Support in Mathematics-

Intensive Support (Reception Focus)

Some schools may benefit from additional, bespoke support to remove barriers to effective change.
